GREENVILLE — Six time All-American and East Carolina school record holder, Tynita Butts, heads to Sacramento, Calif., to compete in the women’s high jump at the 2014 USA Track & Field (USATF) Outdoor National Championships. Butts is set to compete Sunday, June 29 at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State University, while the Sacramento Sports Commission will serve as the local organizing committee.

Butts, who was named Conference USA Outdoor Field Athlete-of-the-Year last week, concluded her collegiate career as the school record holder in the high jump with a mark of 1.91-meters (6’ 3.25”). She also set the standard in the long jump with a distance of 6.22-meters (20’ 5”). Her clearance in the high jump ranks her second in the nation.

In her most recent performance, Butts placed second in the high jump at the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a mark of 1.86-meters (6’ 1.25”), which was just one inch shy of winning the national title. The Alexandria, Va., native earned the highest-ever finish by a Pirate in the NCAA Championships.

Butts will now turn her attention to representing ECU at the USATF National Championships this weekend. She is one of 15 women who will compete in the women’s high jump. Butts will go up against student-athletes from UCLA, Texas, Boston University, Central Connecticut and South Dakota, as well as a number of unattached athletes including Chaunte Lowe, who is representing Nike and holds the meet and American record in the event with a clearance of 2.05-meters (6’ 8.75”), which she set in 2010.
