Washington City Council to meet Monday

The first Washington City Council meeting of the new fiscal year is Monday at 5:30 p.m. The council will discuss a number of items, along with receiving a presentation from Heather Jacobs-Deck of the Pamlico-Tar River Foundation.
Jacobs-Deck will present the Riverkeeper Cleanup Cup to the city, after officials and residents helped remove trash from Pamlico Plantation, Tranters Creek and Havens Gardens in April.
Susan Francis will also go before the council to discuss flooding issues in the 1300 block of Bonner Street.
The city council is expected to authorize the Washington Police and Fire Department’s application for a $1,500 Walmart grant. The grant will pay for items Washington children can’t afford at Christmas.
“It’s the $1,500 grant that they apply for every year. This is the Shop with a Public Safety Officer event, and it is around Christmas time and they’ll go do some shopping at Walmart,” said Brian Alligood, Washington’s city manager.
The city will declare surplus on two more city-owned vehicles as well, which will be posted on www.GovDeals.com. Through the website, the city will auction a 2000 Ford Explorer and 2000 International Garbage Truck.
“It works really well because there are only certain ways we can get rid of property by state law,” Alligood said. “Auction style is one way to do it and this works really well. There is a little bit of cost of doing this because they get a certain percentage for doing it, but you get such broad range of folks that look at it because it’s on the Internet.”
During Monday’s meeting, the council will vote on whether to accept William Cummings’ offer on the old City Hall building or wait for another one.
“We (the city) put some language in the agreement that would set some time frames, in which if someone were to purchase it they would have to complete certain milestones and if they didn’t the city would have the ability to take the property back,” Alligood said.
