This weekend two organizations have partnered for a clothing drive and have given community members incentive to participate.

From Aug. 1 to Aug. 3, Belk in Washington will be collecting gently used pairs of jeans for its “Trade In, Trade Up Denim Event” through a partnership with the Beaufort County United Way. In return, donors will be given a five-dollar coupon toward a new pair of jeans, said Sally Love, executive director for the BCUW.

Love said the drive is part of a United Way Worldwide mission to provide clothing for those in need. UWW has partnered with Belk Corporate Offices to hold the drive all over the United States. A collection box will be set up in the Belk store and those wishing to donate can do so anytime between today and Sunday during Belk’s store hours, Love said.

“It’s not specific need in the community that we know of, but it was just a general drive because the partnership and Belk being a clothing store,” Love said.

The jeans collected over the weekend will be distributed back into the community, Love said. Local schools and nonprofit organizations like the American Red Cross and Salvation Army will disperse the jeans to children and adults who are in need of clothing.

“The schools and nonprofits take care of distribution,” Love said. “We don’t often do clothing drives, but the schools conduct clothing distribution at some point during the year. If they’re adult-sized jeans, they will be distributed through a nonprofit organization. It’s kind of an either-or thing.”

Belk in Washington is located at 981 Washington St.
