GOOD START: The Coke defense stops a breakaway in yesterday’s game against Pizza Inn.

In a match between two Division III opponents, Coke quickly erased an early deficit and powered its way to a 7-1 victory over Pizza Inn on Saturday at the Susiegray McConnell Sports Complex.

Both teams of 11 and 12 year olds played through overcast, steamy conditions that left no shirt dry by the game’s end. After a few early chances from Coke, Pizza Inn’s Taylor Baxter found herself on the receiving end of a Melvin Trejo through ball. Baxter weaved her way through the defense and slipped a shot past the keeper for a goal.

On the ensuing possession, keeper Andrew Keech came up with a huge save, tipping a shot from Coke’s Martin Diaz over the bar. But Diaz would capitalize minutes later from the same spot, blasting a shot off Keech’s hands and into the back of the net to tie the game.

The Coke midfield cut off a break and worked the ball to Diaz, who plowed his way through the defense for his second goal of the contest, setting the tone for the rest of the game.

Later in the half, midfielder Colby Tant scored on a scramble in front of the net and Hermelo Perez netted a goal by redirected a deflection off the goalie.

In stoppage time, Coke forward Stewart Hopper dribbled up the sideline and ripped a shot, which deflected off a defender and into the goal to give his team a commanding 5-1 lead at the break.

Coke outshot Pizza Inn 13-2 in the first half and controlled possession for most of the second.

One of two opportunities for Pizza Inn came on a Trejo breakaway hat was stuffed by the keeper. Minutes later, Coke’s Hailey Bolles led a counter attack up the field and blasted one to the left of the goal keeper.

Coke tacked up another late goal and put the game out of reach. With the win, Coke improves to 2-0 this season and will face Katy Labarbera Sunday at 1 p.m. on Field 7. Coke drops to 0-2 and will try to pick up win No. 1 against Select Bank at 3:30 p.m. on Field 7.
