Third Street under construction

The conditions of certain roads around Washington have long been a complaint for local drivers, but starting today, those complaints are being addressed.

According to Washington City Manager Brian Alligood, on Wednesday afternoon, the North Carolina Department of Transportation sent the city notice that road crews will begin milling and resurfacing a span of Third Street (N.C. Highway 32), from Bridge Street (U.S. Highway 17 business) heading west to the city limits at the Washington Park Bridge.

The work is part of NCDOT’s resurfacing program in Beaufort County for 2014, Alligood said.

According to Washington Police and Fire Services Director Stacy Drakeford, Third Street will not be closed. Rather, one lane will be shut down to be resurfaced and traffic will be routed around that lane.

“Traffic will be very slow through that area,” Drakeford said.
