The Down East Seniors Club held their October 8 meeting at the Blind Center of NC in Washington. President John Tunstall led the meeting. Ed Sample led the singing of “God Bless America” and gave the invocation. Dick Robinson was welcomed back and he provided humor.
Program Chairman James Lupton introduced Karen Melton, Veterans Service Officer for Beaufort County. Her office is at 1308 Highland Drive in Washington. She assists local military veterans in seeking benefits from the Veterans Administration. She said that, while veterans know that they are qualified for medical care for wartime injuries, many have health problems resulting from service not in combat. Two examples are hearing loss from repeated weapon firing and leg and back joint problems (such as arthritis) from repeated parachute jumps. To file any medical claim, the veteran must have his form DD214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty. When a service member dies due to service-related injuries, the surviving spouse is entitled to certain benefits. The VA medical clinic in Greenville is now staffing. If a veteran will take his DD214 to the NC Driver’s License office they will have VETERAN put on his driver’s license. When making purchases from some companies (such as Lowe’s), the veteran can show the license and get a discount.
Clif Heidel will handle scheduling for the Salvation Army bell ringing this year.
Joe Rose won the 50/50 drawing.
