BATH — A local church continues its more than 50 years of fundraising for church and community mission with its annual bazaar this weekend.
On Nov. 15, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Bath Christian Church will host the event in the church’s fellowship hall, Sunday school classrooms, grounds and all other available space, according to Claudia Alligood, a church member who helps head the event. The church’s womens’ group is heading the event, which features a wide array of activities, including a yard sale, vast amounts of food for sale, a book room, a canned goods section and a venue for families to pose for the camera and have holiday photos to share with extended family and friends, Alligood said.
Alligood said the church’s kitchen will open at 6:30 a.m. where fresh, hot biscuits will be available for early shoppers to purchase, and the yard sale will open in the Old Bath High School Gym at 7 a.m. The yard sale will include items from donors who have downsized their homes or are cleaning out for retirement. Many church and community members have also been working on craft projects that will produce a number of items available for purchase, including greeting cards and gift tags, painted glassware, wooden cutouts, refurbished furniture, needlework and nautical items.
At the event, the women’s group has prepared breakfast and lunch for shoppers to purchase, Alligood said. For breakfast, cheese and sausage biscuits will be available, and for lunch, soup with a choice of chicken salad or pimento cheese sandwiches can be purchased to give shoppers extra energy to browse the vast amounts of items available at the bazaar, Alligood said. There will also be pies and cakes of all kinds, candies, cookies, breads, cheese balls, frozen pies, frozen casseroles and a canned goods section that features jars of pepper jelly, pepper relish, pears, figs, grape and strawberry jellies and preserves, pickles, barbecue sauce, vinegars and other goods, all of which is available for purchase.
Alligood said a raffle will be held featuring items donated or crafted by church and community members. The items that will be raffled off include a print of an original painting of Bonner’s Point, painted by Sandra Dupree; a mirror donated by Curtis and Wanda White; a painting donated by Marcia Norman, a lover of art; a vintage stuffed animal donated by Peggy Davis; and a Thanksgiving jar created by Debbie Smith.
A new feature of the event this year is a service in which attendees can have photographs of themselves with friends or family. A background for holiday photos will be available in preparation for Christmas cards, Alligood said. Also, a personalizing station will be set up during the event for items to be personalized, whether it be for Christmas ornaments or other purchases.
Alligood said the church hosts the event in order to contribute to the community through outreach and missions programs, while providing a day of fellowship for the church members and the event’s many visitors. The church contributes to several nonprofits in the community, including Ruth’s House, Eagles Wings and a backpack program at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Alligood said.
“The ladies of our church, with the held of many of our men, work very hard to create an experience that others will want to share and will want to revisit year after year,” Alligood said. “It is through the efforts of this project that we are able to complete many worthwhile additions to our church’s ongoing programs, and we are able to lend a hand through our many outreach and mission programs.
“It’s kind of a nucleus for our women’s group. It’s a driving mission. We want everybody to see the love of God in some way other than us going and preaching verbally to people. This way, we are showing our faith by going out and helping others, and it’s amazing the people in the community who are not a part of our church that participate. They realize the money is going back into the community.”
