The Pamlico Writers Group and the Beaufort County Arts Council are sponsoring the third annual Pamlico Writers Competition concurrent with the Pamlico Writers Conference to be held March 20–21 at the Turnage Theater in Washington. The writer’s competition ends on March 8, with an awards ceremony at the close of the conference on March 21.
There are three adult competition categories: fiction, non-fiction and poetry, each with a $100 first-, $50 second-, and local merchant gift certificate third-place awards. The high school competition has two categories: fiction and poetry, with each category carrying a $250 cash scholarship award.
The blind adult writing competition is open to any adult writer over age 18. Competition entries must be the author’s personal work, the author must own publication rights, and entries flaunting degrading sexual and physical violence or espousing extreme political views will not be considered. Prose entries may not exceed 2,500 words and poetry entries may not exceed 200 words. Entries are uploaded to the competition website in Word (doc or docx), Adobe (pdf) or Google Docs formats. Each adult prose entry requires a $10 reading fee while three poetry entries may be entered for a $10 reading fee.
The high school competition is open to current high-school students under age 18 in grades 9-12. All rules for the adult competition apply to the high-school competition except entries are free of reading fees. High-school students over 18 years old are encouraged to enter the adult competition.
Competition entries are made online at www.pamlicowritersconference.org where you may also register to attend the Pamlico Writers Conference.
