WILLIAM TAFT “BILLY” CANNON JR.

Jan. 31, 2015

William Taft “Billy” Cannon, Jr., 69, of Morehead City, formerly of Greenville, NC, passed away peacefully with his wife at his side at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville on Saturday, January 31, 2015.

A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday at 3:30 pm in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel in Greenville, NC.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Billy was a kind and loving man with a very tall smile. He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War.  He loved the outdoors and his affection for the Crystal Coast coupled with his enjoyment of boating, salt water fishing, and working near the ocean breezes gave him much relaxation.  He spent many years working in the family business, Cannons Tobacco Warehouse and also opened and operated his own business in Washington, NC, Fields and Flowers Nursery, for over 14 years.  Billy was a lifelong member of Immanuel Baptist Church.

In Billy’s younger years, his favorite sport was participating in baseball in which he excelled in as an extraordinary pitcher.  Later in life, he enjoyed downhill snow skiing and was an excellent master of the slopes, regardless of which mountain he was on.

He is survived by his: wife, Carolyn, of the home; daughter, Shannon Huffman and husband, Eric; grandchildren, Hannah and James Huffman, all of Norcross, GA; mother, Margie Cannon; sister, Alice Glennon and husband, Tom; brother, Ray Cannon and wife, Sue, all of Greenville; and a number of special nieces and nephews and their families whom he adored.

Memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church, 1101 S. Elm St., Greenville, NC 27858, Greenville Little League, P.O. Box 20520, Greenville, NC 27858, or a charity of one’s choice.
