A dream that you wish can come true

Next week, an area kindergartener will depart for Disney World — her dream vacation — with her family.
The young girl, who was born with Spina bifida and hydrocephalus, recently had this dream granted by the Dream Factory of North Carolina Greenville chapter, and will leave for Florida and spend about a week visiting parks like Magic Kingdom, Universal Studios and SeaWorld. Although she lives every day with two lifelong medical conditions, the girl does not let it limit her and what she enjoys, according to Dream Factory board member Jerry Fisher.
The Dream Factory is a volunteer-driven organization that grants dreams of children between the ages of 3 and 18, who are chronically and critically ill. It acquires funds to be able to grant dreams to those who otherwise may not have the opportunity to live their dream. But, like many organizations, Dream Factory doesn’t get its funds from grant monies, but through local-level fundraising.
With each trip costing anywhere from $5,000 to $6,000, and having granted dreams of eight different children in 2014, the organization does a lot of legwork and coordinating to raise enough money to be able to support its program.
And not only does it have dedicated volunteers that work hard to meet that end, the organization also really touches people’s lives and allows families to have valuable quality time away together — something they might not have been able to do otherwise.
If you think of how difficult it is for some families to make a living, in general, just imagine how much more difficult it would be to make ends meet if one added all the doctor bills and healthcare costs associated with a family member having an illness that requires special care and treatment. Taking a vacation would be a very difficult thing to not only plan, but also pay for.
So this organization’s hard work and consideration is invaluable to those who may be living a more challenging life than others, and it is a really special experience for those who have their dreams granted.
