The Chowan Singers, the premier choral ensemble of Chowan University, will make a special appearance Sunday at First Baptist Church in downtown Washington.
The ensemble will be performing at First Baptist’s regular services at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.
“It promises to be both beautiful and an inspiring experience of worship,” said Greg Barmer, First Baptist’s minister of music.
The entire church service, at both listed times, will consist of the music of Chowan’s touring choir, Barmer said. Repertoire for the concert will include historical works by Anton Bruckner, Josef Rheinberger and Thomas Tallis, in addition to modern compositions by Forrest, Hogan, Kirchner, LaBarr and Sterling, according to a press release from the Chowan Singers.
The choir has presented numerous concerts throughout North Carolina and the Mid-Atlantic region, as well as traveled overseas to perform in Israel, the Palestinian Territories, Egypt, France, Italy and Ireland. In February of 2016, the choral department has been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
“Chowan has become one of the fastest growing schools in the nation, is committed to providing a solid Christian education, and the choral program has flourished in recent years,” Barmer said.
The ensemble is under the direction of Aaron Rice, director of choral activities and assistant professor of music at Chowan University, and Chowan’s artist in residence Paula Pressnell, both of whom serve as church musicians at Murfreesboro Baptist Church. Barmer said he has a close relationship with the music folks at Chowan, a Baptist school, and when the Singers’ touring season meshed with First Baptist’s schedule, they arranged to make First Baptist a stop on the tour.
“We love Chowan and want to support them, and the timing was good for us,” Barmer said. “I’m excited to have such a fine group from an institution that has really flourished these last several years.”
First Baptist Church is located at the corner of Harvey and East Main streets in downtown Washington. All are welcome to attend the Sunday services.
