Cub Scouts in Pack 99 of Washington and Pack 1774 of Chocowinity experienced the thrill of competition Saturday during this year’s local pinewood derby races, held at Beaufort County Community College.

Top honors for Pack 99 went to David Edwards, a student at Trinity Christian School in Greenville. The son of David and Jeanne Woolard of Washington, young David was not only the winner of the first place trophy in the Webeloes division division, he took the overall champion award for his pack.

David said he worked on his car for four or five hours, with help from his dad.

According to cub master Robbie King, division winners for Pack 99, which is sponsored by Washington United Methodist Church, were: Wolf: Deeson Swain, first; Alex Adams, second; and Eddie King, third; Bear: Mack Hudson, first; Matthew Taylor, second; and Louie Martinez, third; Webeloes: David Woolard, first; Ben Janes, second: and Jameson Edwards, third;
Tiger: Evan Allen, first; and Louis Miller, second.

“The derby lets them get an idea how to build things,” King said after the competition. “In December, we had a pinewood derby building day, so it starts teaching them how to do things on their own.”

The top three Scouts in pinewood derby competition now qualify for the district races, scheduled for March 14 in Bear Grass, King added.

A second pinewood derby, this one featuring Scouts from Pack 1774, followed the main event.

Jahrell Norman received the first place trophy in the Wolf division, while Logan Johnston took first place among those in the Tiger division, according to cub master James Johnston. Other Tiger winners were Jacob Pendley, second place, and Caleb Pendley, third. Jacob also won the “best in show trophy” for his car’s design.

The newly organized Pack 1774 is hoping to boost membership, according to Johnston. The pack is open to boys who are in first grade or older; for more information, contact Johnston at 252-561-6338.
