The responsibility of VOA property

To the Editor:
The old saying, “never look a gift horse in the mouth” is not always wise. The county is considering taking possession of the VOA property. It is federal surplus property that will come with strings attached. It can only be used for parks and recreational use. It is located in the far west corner of the county adjacent to Martin County making it inaccessible to most of the population. It is 2,800 acres. It will be a liability. Your tax dollars will mow and maintain the property. It may even require someone to stay on sight to secure the property. We should encourage the Federal Government to auction the property to the public. Whoever buys it will have the responsibility for maintenance, improvements and property taxes. It will then be an asset.
