A general contracting company in Washington was recently named one of the 2015 Best Employers in North Carolina.

Determined by Business North Carolina, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), N.C. State Council and Best Companies Group, the list comes from a statewide survey. The survey and awards program are designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in North Carolina, according to a WIMCO press release.

According to the release, companies across the state were evaluated through a two-part survey process that focused on multiple facets of each company’s personnel and operations. The first part of the survey included the evaluation of workplace policies, practices, philosophies, systems and demographics for each nominated company. The second part included an employee survey, measuring the employee experience with the company, the release said.

Kevin Rawls, president and CEO of WIMCO, said the survey was sent to all 53 employees and inquired about the overall experience of working at WIMCO. One question asked, for example, was, “What does this organization do that makes it a place you want to work?”

Among employee responses were “WIMCO has a great family atmosphere, it makes work fun and conducts family outings and parties,” Rawls recounted. WIMCO offers flex time for employees to go exercise throughout the day and on occasion the company has sponsored company cruises. This Thursday, the company will meet for a game of laser tag, Rawls said.

“WIMCO was honored to be chose as one of the Best Companies in North Carolina for which to work,” Rawls said. “We are growing and that takes people — good, hardworking people. We have made several new hires in the past few months and the team members that have come on with us are immediately considered part of the WIMCO ‘family.’ The ‘family’ atmosphere is definitely what sets us apart. What makes me so proud is not a particular project that we’ve built or something tangible that we’ve accomplished. I am most proud of the high-integrity, family-oriented, all-around excellent people who I get to call my team. We work incredibly hard, but we also have a lot of fun and that means so much to everyone.”

Rawls said the company is one of the top general contractors for Walgreens and has worked on 425 Food Lions. Currently, it is heading the First Christian Church rebuild project on East Third Street and has about 50 other active projects in the works, Rawls said.

WIMCO Corp., headquartered in Washington, is a locally owned and operated general contractor with 65 years of construction experience and is licensed in 11 states, according to the release.

“We love working in our hometown,” Rawls said. “We have been in business for 65 years, and it is our collective goal that the next 65 years will be even better than the first. The only way to achieve this goal is through loyal employees who ‘buy-in’ to the fun but hard-working culture that makes this company great.”

WIMCO Corp. is located at 2533 West 5th Street, Washington. For more information about WIMCO, visit www.wimcocorp.com.
