TARBORO — The Washington golf team won the Eastern Plains Conference championship on Monday after taking first place at The Links at Cotton Valley, the last of six conference matches.
With the win, the Pam Pack secures the sweep, taking first in all six conference matches, while also preserving its undefeated streak (8-0).
Next Monday, Pam Pack golfers will compete in the Eastern Plains Conference Championship Match at Cutter Creek in Snow Hill to determine individual champions. Right now, favorites to take gold are Southwest Edgecombe’s Cole Jefferys, the reigning champion, as well as Washington’s William Page and Peter Birdsong and North Johnston’s Hunter Pike.
“I would say right now we’re keeping expectations high,” said Washington coach Jim Kozuch. “We don’t want to just make it to states, we want to win the regional. If our guys can play to our potential, we have a solid chance and we’re looking to carry the momentum into states.”
In Tarboro, Washington’s score of 315 was its best mark its posted all season, ballooning the team’s conference lead to 107 strokes. Birdsong took first place, individually, with a season-best score of 73, while Jefferys and Page finished tied for second, both shooting a 76. Washington’s Eric Lovenberg tied for third place with a score of 78.
In the table, Farmville Central finishes out the season in second place, while North Johnston locked up third place. Individuals from all three top finishers automatically qualify for the regional match to be held at Cutter Creek on May 4. Jefferys, Beddingfield’s Tyler Pittman and Southwest Edgecombe’s Jack Coltrane were selected as at large bids to the regional match, having competed on teams that finished in the lower half of the Eastern Plains Conference.
With the end of conference play, the committee also announced All-EPC selections. Along with Jefferys, who is the favorite to repeat at EPC Player-of-the-Year, Page and Birdsong earned a first-team nod. Lovenberg was the only Pam Pack player to earn second-team accolades.
Before the EPC Championship next week, Washington will travel to Cutter Creek to take on Greene Central today before heading to the Scotch Hall Preserve (Merry Hill) on Thursday to face Northside, Manteo and Riverside for a non-conference warm-up to the eastern regional match.
