To the Editor,
I was extremely disappointed this morning when I read the WDN article about the possibility of closing the pool at the McConnell Sports Complex. I clearly remember the enthusiasm of 14 years ago when funds were being raised to build this pool. The community was overwhelmingly behind the project, excited about providing a place for our children to learn how to swim and recreate in a safe environment. It only makes sense in a community surrounded by rivers, canals and swamps.
I am perplexed by the notion that paying back $250,000 to the state’s Parks and Recreation Trust Fund in order to escape the remaining 11 years on the contract is a wise business decision. How much money could the city pool possibly be losing? It was never expected that this facility would make money. It was hoped that it would break even or operate at a slight loss. A small subsidy for the city was well worth the benefit of providing such a valuable asset to our citizens.
The WDN article does not mention alternative solutions to closing the pool. Is it being managed properly? Are all revenue options being considered? Pool parties, water aerobics classes, swim team fees, concession stand revenue, swim lessons, lifeguard courses and membership/guest fees are all possible revenue sources. Is the pool being properly maintained in order to keep operating costs down? Are staffing levels and hours of operation appropriate? Are we using volunteers where we can? Are we marketing it correctly?
It is my hope that city council gives thoughtful consideration to the future of the McConnell Sports Complex pool, which is still relatively new and so many people worked so hard to bring to Washington.
