TOP FINISHER: Washington senior Connor Wilkins won the 2-A individual eastern regional championship. The tournament was held on Saturday and Monday.

SNOW HILL — Washington No. 1 Connor Wilkins, a senior, won his second-straight individual 2-A eastern regional tennis tournament, held at Greene Central High School on Saturday and Monday. The brother duo of Ben and Holt McKeithan took home doubles regional runner-up honors.

All three players advance to the 2-A individual state tournament, which will take place on Friday and Saturday at the Cary Tennis Park. Wilkins will take on James Hendrix of St. Pauls in Round 1 and a win could potentially align a rematch against Hendersonville’s Jacob Fuqua, the defending 2-A state runner-up, who knocked off Wilkins in the first round last season.

In doubles, the McKeithan brothers will be tasked with taking down Daniel Lee and Guy Blanc of the powerhouse North Carolina School of Science and Math.

As a team, after shutting out First Flight last week, the Pam Pack powered its way through Round 2 of the 2-A dual team tennis bracket, defeating Ayden-Grifton (7-6, 5-3 Eastern Carolina), 5-3, at Washington High School on Tuesday.

In singles, Wilkins defeated Elliot Cherry, 6-0, 6-1, while junior Holt McKeithan coasted by Clayton Bjerkeset, 6-1, 6-0.

In No. 3 singles, Zack Pagnani and Ayden-Grifton senior Drew McKinney went the distance. Pagnani battled early on, but dropped the first set, 6-4. The Pam Pack sophomore fought back in Set 2 with a 7-5 win, forcing a tiebreaker. In a back-and-forth affair, it was Pagnani who came out on top, 11-9, in the final set.

Ayden Grifton senior Ryan Joyner took care of business against Washington junior Eric Crozier in No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-3.

Like Pagnani’s match, the Chargers’ Noah Little and sophomore Mac Skillen, playing at No. 5 singles, also went the distance. Little took the first set, 6-2, while Skillen dominated the second set, 6-1. In the end, however, it was Little who was able to recovered, taking the tiebreaker, 10-7.

Ben McKeithan defeated Dillon McCullen in No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-4, as a spot in the third round would come down to doubles, Washington holding a 3-2 lead.

The doubles combo of Wilkins and Pagnani locked up the match with a 10-8 win, despite Washington’s state qualifying doubles duo of Ben and Holt McKeithan dropping their match, 10-6.

With the win, Washington improves to 12-2 (8-0 Eastern Plains) and will face the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Round 2 on Monday in Durham.
