CHOCOWINITY — A Chocowinity tradition continues Saturday with an antique tractor and farm show hosted by the Eastern Antique Power Association.

Festivities kick off at 10 a.m. with a flag raising ceremony conducted by Boy Scout Troop 99, according to association president Stan Hudson. A full schedule of events runs until 5 p.m. Admission is free and the public is welcome.

The day’s lineup includes a parade of power, children’s pedal tractor races, displays and demonstrations featuring antique tractors and engines, exhibitions of antique cars and trucks, slowest tractor race, auctions and food and craft booths. Food items sold during the day will include hot dogs, homemade ice cream, soft drinks and flavored shaved ice treats.

Between 800 and 1,000 spectators attend the show each year, according to Hudson. The association was organized in 1996 and its 13 original members hosted their first show later that year. Approximately 40 antique farm enthusiasts comprise the association’s current membership.

The first show was held on land offered by the late Jimmy Hudson, and his son Stan continues the tradition each year. The show is held on Bear Creek Road, just off Highway 33 approximately two miles west of Chocowinity.

The association’s mission is to “restore and preserve antique farm equipment, keeping history alive for the future, provided that it will be completed in a family environment,” according to Hudson.

Along with this weekend’s show, the association also hosts a similar event each October for area special needs individuals, their families and caregivers. Proceeds from the spring show fund the fall event.

“The members of the club enjoy displaying and sharing pieces of our family history and culture,” Hudson said. “And the community enjoys the interaction and seeing the way things were done in the past.”

H & H Golf Carts of Chocowinity has offered the use of a 10-person cart to assist elderly folks attending the show, Hudson added.

And a special invitation has been issued to any Future Farmers of America members, past and present, interested in attending a ceremony planned for 2 p.m.
