GOSPEL SING: Saturday evening, the Still Water Band will perform at Riverside Campground in Ponzer, showcasing a selection of bluegrass and gospel songs to attendees.

PONZER — Hands will clap, feet will tap and voices will join the Still Water Band in singing bluegrass gospel tunes at Riverside Campground in Ponzer this weekend.

Saturday at 7 p.m., the Still Water Band, of Washington, will perform for the campground’s weekly program, Riverside Gospel Sing, a free weekly offering of gospel music.

The Still Water Band, made up of bass guitarist Wendy Wallace, lead guitarist Bobby Moore, mandolin player Jay Moore and banjo and guitarist Donnie Moore, will hit the stage and present a list of bluegrass tunes like, “In the Garden,” “Are You Washed in the Blood?” and “Do Lord,” Wallace said. The band has performed a total of four times at Riverside in years past.

“The first time, you know, you’re not sure what you’re getting into,” Wallace said. “But it was great, and we had great response from the audience there. It’s gospel-based, and we enjoy presenting the message and hopefully, we can touch at least one person. IF we can touch at least one person, then it’s worth it.”

Wallace said the band has been playing together for about five years and has performed at events like Beaufort County Traditional Music Festival. At its inception, the band was called the Moore Family Band, and through Monday night practices almost every week, the band has honed its skills and built up an arsenal of about 30 songs, most of which are favorites and tunes that most people know, Wallace said.

“We do some new stuff, but with the crowd that is (at Riverside), they seem to like the stuff they know where they can sing along or tap their feet. To me, it’s just important to get the message out. I was not raised up in church, but my husband was. I accepted Christ into my life, and I’d like to share that message with whoever will listen. Maybe they need Him in their lives, and he can be the answer. We just like going and having a good time.”

The weekly program, headed by Bennett Emory, features local acts and draws audiences from as far as Greenville and other outlying areas, according to Emory. During the performance, a variety of refreshments are available for purchase, including candy, popcorn, drinks and more.

Emory said the program is happy to have the Still Water Band back this weekend and commented on the outlook for the performance. This October, the program will celebrate its 30-year anniversary, Emory said.

“We’re just here to provide a good time for people on Saturday night, and so far, the good Lord has blessed us,” Emory said. “The people that come are just down-to-earth good people. Most groups that come, do it because it’s their ministry for the Lord. They come because they enjoy it, and they love making music for other people. (The Still Water Band) has played several times. They’re very nice folks, and they do a great job. We’re definitely looking forward to it, and we always enjoy it. (The Still Water Band) loves the Lord and they love what they’re doing for Him.”

The campground is located at 272 Riverside Campground Road in Belhaven. For more information, call Bennett Emory at 252-926-8621.
