No. 4-seeded Wilson-Jones finished off the 2015 Washington Youth Baseball Rookie League season Wednesday night at the Susiegray McConnell Complex with a come-from-behind, 9-5 win over No. 2-seeded Pamlico Insurance in the championship game.
Leaving runners on base was an unfortunate trend early for the underdog, as three-straight singles from Cameron Whitley, Jacob Spivey and Cayden Pake gave way to a scoreless first frame. Again, in the second inning, Wilson-Jones worked two runners on base, only to have two-straight fielder’s choices end the threat.
Pamlico Insurance came out swinging in the first two innings, capitalizing off infield errors and posting three runs — hits from Bryce Williams, Landon Brokenburgh, Sawyer Vosburg and Carlos Delgado.
In the top of the third, Wilson-Jones would have its answer. Again, the trio of Whitley, Spivey and Pake recorded three-straight singles to lead off and two batters later, Drew Cox also capitalized with a single of his own. When the dust settled, Wilson-Jones now held a 4-3 lead after three. But they weren’t done.
Trey Hudson, Nolan Dixon, Whitley, Spivey and Pake started the fourth inning off with five-straight singles. Cox later came through with the big hit of the afternoon, a bases-clearing triple that gave his team a commanding lead. Landon Jones would also single in the inning.
Pamlico Insurance would push across just one run after the third, an error and a Sawyer Vosburgh single being the only offensive production in the final frames.
Whitley, Spivey and Pake all finished with 3-for-3 lines to lead Wilson-Jones to the postgame award ceremony.
