GED classes fall under new name
Beaufort County Community College’s Basic Skills division is changing its name to College and Career Readiness. The division encompasses the High School Equivalency Program and GED testing, as well as English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. The name change is intended to better portray the purpose of the division and to mirror the name change made a few years ago by the N.C. Community College System office.
“The change just reflects what we already do,” said Tony Taylor, Director of College and Career Readiness. “We do more than just high school equivalency. We provide readiness for either college or a career, and we’ve always provided those services.”
The purpose of the division remains the same: to prepare students in those classes to pursue either a postsecondary college degree or the career of their choice. GED classes have been held on BCCC’s campus as well as NC Works, Metropolitan AME Zion Church, Whitestone Church, the Boys and Girls Club of Belhaven, and Secota Village in Columbia, N.C. ESL classes are offered on BCCC’s campus. The schedule and locations for Fall 2015 are being finalized and will be announced in the coming weeks.
In addition to the name change, the format of the high school equivalency classes has shifted to better prepare students for both the test and for their future. Since the test is administered on a computer, it requires not only knowledge of the material, but also computer literacy, so the classes have been tailored to teach students those needed skills. The classes also feature new emphasis on learning in context of the students’ career, college and future.
“We are focusing on transitioning into either college or a career, and preparing them for career pathways,” Taylor said.

New student orientation scheduled throughout summer
Students attending Beaufort County Community College this fall, along with their parents, are encouraged to attend New Student Orientation, which will provide them with information on a variety of topics designed to ensure that they get the fullest possible benefit from their college experience. The first orientation session was held May 30, and additional sessions will be held June 25, July 7, Aug. 1 and Aug. 12.
“We’ve really been working on our orientation schedule,” said Rick Anderson, BCCC vice president of student services. “We’re dividing everything into groups so that we can work with smaller groups and provide more personalized attention, and we’re splitting the parents out separately to cover the topics that are most important to them.”
Topics covered include admissions, financial aid, counseling services, registration and drop/add, student IDs and parking passes, online services and email, and study skills.
“The study skills session is one that we’re excited about,” Anderson said. “We want our students to know what to expect from the college workload and how to adapt to it, so we’re bringing in some students who have already been successful to talk about what they’ve done.”
Parents will learn about the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), college resources, paying for school, and how to help their students succeed.
The orientation session will also include a campus tour, lunch and an opportunity to register for classes.
