University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill graduate Caroline Hudson recently joined the staff of the Daily News.
Hudson, a Greensboro native and graduate of Northwest Guilford High School, has had a passion for writing since she was young, facilitating her choice of a major in journalism at Chapel Hill, she said. There she wrote for the Daily Tar Heel, the university’s newspaper.
During her first three years there, she was a staff writer on the city desk, covering news about Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Following, she served as a senior writer, allowing her to work on longer, more in-depth articles, as well as covering an affordable housing beat, Hudson said.
Hudson said in her spare time she has a passion for music, which was her minor in college. Since the age of 8, she has played piano and has sung in choir since the age of 13. She also enjoys reading and animals.
Hudson hopes to get involved in the local community and make personal connections, allowing her to better serve the area through her writing, she said. Within the past six months, she has gained a passion and interest in community journalism and believes in smaller towns, newspapers will continue to thrive.
“I kind of look at it as a higher calling, where we’re serving the people who live here and our job is to serve the community by telling the truth. An overall goal is to just serve the community and present the truth to them because in college, we were really taught that it’s a cornerstone of democracy, and a paper is something that can bring a community closer together.”
