Two Northside High School graduates were awarded TriCounty Telecom’s annual $1,000 scholarship this year.

The two recipients were Jacqueline Chavez, the daughter of Octaviano and Lourdes Chavez, and Sarah Kaitlyn Tetterton, the daughter of Dawn and Erick Tetterton.

The TriCounty Telecom Foundation awards two scholarships each year to two students whose names are drawn at random. The foundation gives each recipient $1,000 each year for up to four years.

Scholarship recipient Sarah Kaitlyn Tetterton, 18, a Pinetown resident, said she plans to use the money toward tuition, as she is set to attend the University of North Carolina–Wilmington in the fall and major in business development and entrepreneurship.

According to a press release, Chavez will attend Beaufort County Community College in the fall to study nursing.

Tetterton said besides her love for the outdoors and a quilting hobby, she has had an interest in business for years and has her own community car wash business.  She was also involved in several clubs in high school.

The idea for the car wash began when Tetterton wanted to save some money to buy a guitar. After raising the $300 she needed, she has kept the business going ever since, she said.

“I kind of knew I wanted to work for myself … I really enjoyed being able to work on my own schedule,” she said. “My dad helped me get it started, and I guess I’ll still do it on the weekends when I come home.”

Tetterton said she is sad to leave her hometown for college, but she is looking forward to the future with excitement. Her traveling with high-school clubs led her to tour colleges in different states, but she fell in love with the campus at Wilmington.

“Being able to go to other states and stuff made me realize that there’s no place like home, really… I enjoyed Northside, but I’m ready for something new,” she said. “I’m really excited, but at the same time, I really love where I live.”
