The 2015 North Carolina Little Tarheel State Tournament for the under-8, under-10 and under-12 (open base) age divisions begins tomorrow at the Susiegray McConnell Sports Complex. The youth showcase marks the final tournament of the Little Tarheel summer all-star season.

Through the next four days, the top all-star teams from North Carolina will go head-to-head in a double-elimination, bracket-style tournament. Those competing earned a bid by either winning their respective regional division tournaments (seven divisions) or being given an at-large bid by the Little Tarheel selection committee. Seeding was chosen at random.

Of the 32 competitors, Beaufort County will have two teams represented — the Washington 10U All-Stars and the Washington 8U All-Stars.

The 10U All-Stars reserved their place by securing a come-from-behind victory against New Bern in the Division 6 championship in Snow Hill earlier this month. Powered by chemistry that’s taken years to build and a lineup accustomed to posting double-digit runs, the 10U All-Stars have their eyes set on reaching Sunday’s championship game. First, they will open up with Wendell tomorrow at 4 p.m. on Field 4.

“The boys on our team are ready to play some ball on their home turf,” said Chip Edwards, the 10U head coach and league president. “They are excited about this weekend and feel like that if they play their best ball, they will have a real shot. Regardless, their coaches are very proud of them and all that they have already achieved.”

The 8U All-Stars also represented their hometown in style by winning the District 6 tournament, held in Swansboro. Transitioning from Cal Ripken-style, slingshot machine pitch to Little Tarheel-sanctioned coach pitch has been priority No. 1 in the days leading up to the tournament. Competing in the largest of the three brackets, the 8U All-Stars will need to fight their way through five rounds and possibly six games of baseball.

For spectators, the cost will be $5 at the gate or $3 for those 12 and under.

Funds from the tournament will also support the Washington Pam Pack football program, which will have its players volunteering at the concession stand for the four-day tournament.
