BLOUNTS CREEK — Dozens of runners lined Blounts Creek on Saturday to compete in the Save Blounts Creek 5K/Walk, a race to raise awareness and money towards the Sound Rivers Foundation’s legal battle against Martin Marietta Materials, Inc., and the N.C. Department of Environmental and Natural Resources.
“I get a feeling that word got out more and more,” said race organizer Les Sheridan, a resident of Blounts Creek. “As far as the run itself, we had more people and I think if we do it again we’ll definitely enhance the numbers. In tern, I feel it had to raise awareness. Everybody who ran it, whether they’re a runner or nature lover, they have a cause now.”
Consisting of 45 participants, the race was broken up into seven different age categories — 13 and under, 14 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50-59 and 60 plus — and awards were distributed to the top finishers from each group.
The course began at Cotton Patch Landing Marina and snaked its way across the banks of Blounts Creek to the new boat launch and through the boat launch. The finish line was located back at the marina.
“In general, there was a good feeling,” Sheridan said. “I think the fact that people were able to contribute to a good cause was a good thing, as well as getting out in that atmosphere we had going on.”
