Belhaven mayor embarks on walk to raise awareness for rural healthcare, Belhaven hospital

CAROLINE HUDSON | DAILY NEWS WALK TO RALEIGH: On Tuesday at 1 p.m., Belhaven Mayor Adam O’Neal (far left), civil rights activist Bob Zellner (second from left) and Beaufort County Commissioner Hood Richardson (right), along with a group of supporters, began the nine-day, 130-mile walk to the Governor’s Mansion in Raleigh. The walk, which is part of the Save the Hospital coalition, is meant to raise support for rural healthcare as well as encourage legislators’ support for the reopening of the hospital in Belhaven. Mayor O’Neal said he also hopes legislators will abolish or amend the laws for certificates of need, a required document the Town of Belhaven has yet to obtain to claim the hospital property under eminent domain.
