BCCC debuts learning enhancement center

Beaufort County Community College has now combined multiple aspects of student resource services into one place, a facility called a Learning Enhancement Center (LEC).
“It’s new, so we’re still working on it, but it’s a large, comfortable space with a supportive atmosphere. Once a student comes in once and sees how much it helps, they will usually keep coming in,” said James Casey, director of the LEC, in a press release.
The release said the LEC is located in Building 3 at the college campus and includes a computer lab, silent testing lab, tutoring services and online resources.
Among the services offered are faculty and peer tutoring, online access to email or the Blackboard site, the writing center and a math lab, according to the release.
Casey said the LEC will also host guest speakers and workshops in the near future.
“We’ve combined those services so that they’re all available in the same place,” he said. “We wanted to streamline the process for our students so they’ll know where to go. If you need help, this is the spot.”
To use the resources of the LEC, enrolled students must turn in a referral form signed by their instructor. The form can be downloaded at the center’s webpage or copies are available at the LEC.
According to the press release, students are already embracing the one-stop place for resources. In the first few weeks of classes, more than 130 students have logged nearly 500 individual visits. These participating students came from a range of 50 different classes.
The center is open Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesdays from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“We want it to be as simple and convenient as possible for students to receive the help they need to be successful in class. With these services in one place, they know where to go, regardless of what subject or what kind of help they need,” Jules Norwood, public relations coordinator at BCCC, wrote in an email. “Likewise for our instructors, when they have students ask for help, there’s one central place to send them. It seems to be working well so far, as there has been steady activity in the new LEC.”
