Upcoming Personal Enrichment classes

Several classes in the categories of Art & Music and Gardening will be offered this fall by the Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College. All classes will be held on the BCCC campus. The schedule is as follows:

Learn to Play Guitar, 6-8:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 22-Oct. 15 or Oct. 27-Nov. 19, in Building 3, Room 116. Churchill Hodges will teach the major and minor chords and how to move between them. Various music types will be covered, and each session will include both group and individual instruction. Registration fee is $55.

  • Weaving a Cornucopia from Natural Materials, 9 a.m. to noon, Mondays, Sept. 21-Oct. 12, in Room 830 of Building 8. Local fiber artist Pamela Zimmerman will guide students as they produce a beautiful cornucopia from natural and native vines and twigs. Registration fee is $50 and includes all materials.
  • Fall Vegetable Gardening Workshop, 6-8:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 1, in Room 829 of Building 8. Learn how to prepare and plant a fall vegetable garden. Instructor Eric Godwin will help students reap a delicious harvest for the Thanksgiving table. Registration fee is $15.
  • Butterflies YES! Deer NO!, 10 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, Oct. 6; or 6-8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 8, in Building 8. Judy Keohane will share the experiences of the Cypress Landing gardeners in creating the community’s butterfly garden. Students will develop a list of plants and techniques to make their own garden a more inviting place for graceful and environmentally important butterflies. Registration fee is $15.
  • Gardening with Bulbs, 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 13; or 9-11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 14, in Room 828 of Building 8. Learn how to choose, plant and maintain bulbs in your yard or garden. Registration fee is $15.

Scholarship recipients announced

The Beaufort County Community College Foundation has announced its scholarship recipients for the Fall 2015 semester. These scholarships are made possible by generous donors in the community, and they support educational opportunities for students who will become productive members of the community — tomorrow’s nurses, technicians, teachers, first responders, and more.

The BCCC Foundation has awarded 68 scholarships totaling $59,720. Scholarship recipients for Fall 2015 include:

Bunyan Ruritan Club Scholarship

Victoria Wallace, the daughter of Ted and Faye Wallace of Pinetown, is the recipient of the Bunyan Ruritan Club Scholarship. An office assistant at Piggly Wiggly, she is pursuing an Associate of Arts degree and would like to continue her education at ECU.

This scholarship is funded by an annual donation to the BCCC Foundation.

Barbara LaBarbera Memorial Scholarship

Frances and Irwin Hulbert Scholarship

Tyler Campbell of Chocowinity is the recipient of the Barbara LaBarbera Memorial Scholarship and the Frances and Irwin Hulbert Scholarship. Campbell attended the Beaufort County Early College High School and is now enrolled in the Registered Nursing program. He plans to continue his education with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.

The LaBarbera Scholarship, established by Civitan on the Pamlico in 2015 to memorialize charter member Barbara LaBarbera, a longtime resident of Beaufort County, is awarded to students accepted to the school of nursing who demonstrate academic achievement and financial need.

The Hulbert Scholarship was established in 1991 to memorialize Harry and Lorraine Alvis, the parents of Frances Hulbert. It was renamed in 2008 by the Hulbert children. Frances Hulbert served on the BCCC Foundation’s Board of Directors for many years.

Dr. Tom Nicholson Scholarship

Charitee Dunlow, the daughter of Andy and Sherry Dunlow of Windsor, is the recipient of the Dr. Tom Nicholson Scholarship. She is enrolled in the Nursing program and plans to work as a Registered Nurse while continuing her education with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

This scholarship endowment was established to provide scholarships for students who are pursuing degrees in medical fields offered at BCCC in honor and memory of Dr. Thomas W. Nicholson.

Myrtle Cutler Jones Scholarship

April E. Keech of Belhaven is the recipient of the Myrtle Cutler Jones Scholarship. A graduate of Northside High School, she is working toward her Associate Degree Nursing at BCCC and would like to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Established in 2002 by the family of Myrtle Cutler Jones, this endowment fund provides an annual scholarship to a second-year BCCC student in a medical technology program. Jones, a Beaufort County native, recognized the importance of medical facilities in rural communities.

Anthony “Tony” A. Capehart Jr. Scholarship

David C. Lee Jr. Scholarship

Andrew Timothy Hardison, the son of Tim and Angie Hardison of Blounts Creek, is the recipient of the Anthony “Tony” A. Capehart Jr. Scholarship and the David C. Lee Jr. Scholarship. Hardison is enrolled in the Automotive Systems Technology program at BCCC and would like to eventually open his own automotive shop.

The Capehart Endowment was established in 2007 to memorialize Washington native Tony Capehart for his 36-year career in industrial management and for his life-long service to his community. The David C. Lee Jr. Scholarship is funded annually for students in the Automotive and Business Technology fields.

David Clark Scholarship

Joshua Anthony White, the son of Jay and Lori White of Edenton, is one of three recipients of the David Clark Scholarship. White is studying diesel engine repair and AgriBusiness at BCCC while working with his grandfather on the family’s farm.

This endowment was established in 2011 by Trader Construction Company of New Bern and Potash Corp of Aurora in memory of David Clark, a Trader Construction Company superintendent. It funds scholarships for students in Industrial Technology programs.

David Clark Scholarship

Jason Squires of Chocowinity is one of three recipients of the David Clark Scholarship. Squires is enrolled in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program. He plans to start a career as a CNC machinist and to continue his education at East Carolina University.

This endowment was established in 2011 by Trader Construction Company of New Bern and Potash Corp of Aurora in memory of David Clark, a Trader Construction Company superintendent. It funds scholarships for students in Industrial Technology programs.

David Clark Scholarship

Jeffrey Egerton of Washington is one of three recipients of the David Clark Scholarship. Egerton is enrolled in the Welding Technology program and is a member of Men of Success, a minority mentoring organization at BCCC.

This endowment was established in 2011 by Trader Construction Company of New Bern and Potash Corp of Aurora in memory of David Clark, a Trader Construction Company superintendent. It funds scholarships for students in Industrial Technology programs.

Lane Scholarship

Sheena Bunch of Bath is the recipient of the Lane Scholarship. She holds an Associate’s Degrees in Accounting and Business Administration and is working toward her Associate Degree Nursing. She would like to continue her studies at ECU.

Established in 1998 in memory of Harold Alton Lane Jr. and in honor of Constance Lane Howard by their parents, Harold Lane Sr. and his wife Louise, this endowment provides annual scholarships to students in the nursing or associate degree programs.
