Athalia Alligood Gravely Howerin

Athalia Alligood Gravely Howerin, age 89, formerly of River Acres, passed away on September 20, 2015 at River Trace in Washington. She was born on January 22, 1926 in Washington to Harley Kugler Alligood and Rosa McDevitt Alligood. She grew up in Washington and graduated from Washington High School. After graduation, Athalia attended Saint Mary’s College in Raleigh. On December 6, 1947, she married William Ashford Gravely of Washington and they were happily married for 34 years until his death in February of 1981. She later married James Howerin and they enjoyed many years of traveling and living on the river until his death in 2007.
Athalia was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Washington and an active volunteer at the Beaufort County Hospital, the Estuarium Center and the local chapter of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. She loved sailing and swimming on the Pamlico River and was also a certified scuba diver, a licensed private pilot and a licensed captain and coxswain in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Athalia is survived by her sons, all of Washington. They are William Ashford Gravely Jr. and wife, Jill; Charles Stephen Gravely and wife, Martha; and Harley Alligood Gravely and wife, Sherry. She is also survived by her daughter, Athy G. Robinson and brothers Harley Kugler Alligood Jr. and wife, Beatrice and William McDevitt Alligood and wife, Charlene. Athalia has six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews who were all very special to her. Athalia was preceded in death by both spouses and her sister, Rosemary Alligood Rhodes.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 25, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church in Washington. A visitation will be held in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. Flowers are appreciated. Donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church Frames of Faith or Mission Fund.
