THURSDAY ROUND UP: Northside falls to North Pitt in fourth quarter

BETHEL — Northside dropped its third-straight game Thusrday evening in the form of a 22-13-road loss to North Pitt.
The contest, originally scheduled for Friday at 7:30 p.m., was moved up to Thursday to avoid heavy rains brough on by Hurricane Joaquin. Entering the fourth quarter, Northside held a 13-7 lead, until two late touchdowns by the host Panthers knocked off the visiting Panthers. No statistics were available for this game.
With the loss, Northside closes out conference play with a 2-3 record heading into next week’s Coastal Plains Conference opener at Southside (5-0) with the Anchor Trophy up for grabs.
WASHINGTON SOCCER COASTS BY NORTH PITT IN CONFERENCE OPENER
BETHEL — The Washington soccer team took the Eastern Plains Conference opener on the road at North Pitt on Thursday, 5-0.
The Pam Pack scored four goals in the first half before capping off the match with a goal in the second half.
Senior Kyle Hodges finished with two goals, while Miguel Hernandez and Freddy Jimenez notched one goal apiece. A Ben McKeithan throw-in that deflected off a defender resulted in the final goal for the Pam pack. Keeper William Tate finished with five saves.
With the win, Washington improves to 12-1 (1-0 EPC) and will host Southwest Edgecombe (0-8-3, 0-1 EPC) at Choppy Wagner Stadium on Tuesday.
EAST CAROLINA EARNS NSCAA TEAM ACADEMIC AWARD
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (ECU) — The East Carolina women’s soccer team earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award for the 2014-15 academic year.
The Pirates posted a 3.35 grade point average and received recognition for the 14th time in the last 16 years. The NSCAA Team Academic Award, which was instituted in 1996, honors any team with a 3.0 GPA or higher. In all, 887 soccer teams (313 men, 574 women) met the minimum requirement to receive the award.
ECU’s grade point average ranks second among American Athletic Conference women’s soccer programs behind only Temple (3.44).
BOYER LANDS RIDE WITH HSCOTT BEFORE REPLACING TONY STEWART
DOVER, Del. (AP) — Clint Bowyer will spend next season with HScott Motorsports before he takes over for Tony Stewart in 2017.
Bowyer was released from his contract with Michael Waltrip Racing because the team is folding at the end of the season. He was named this week as Stewart’s successor in the No. 14 Chevrolet. Stewart is retiring from Sprint Cup racing following the 2016 season.
Bowyer now has a ride with team owner Harry Scott in a deal that will give him a seat and likely team support from Stewart-Haas Racing.
HScott Motorsports fielded Chevrolets this season for Justin Allgaier and Michael Annett.
Bowyer is 16th this season in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship standings. Barring a victory, Bowyer will not advance to the second round.
