After rain delays, fall fun to debut in Chocowinity

CHOCOWINITY — After foul weather caused the postponement of fall festivities at Raised in a Barn Farm in Chocowinity, a Zombie Run last Saturday evening officially kicked off several weeks of special events.
The farm’s Lost in Chocowinity maze was set to open in late September but the rains came — and kept coming — according to Jane Boahn, whose family operates Raised in a Barn Farm.
“We’re extremely disappointed we had to delay twice during extreme rain and it did dampen our spirits, but we realize we’re very blessed that we’re not under catastrophic events like the people in South Carolina,” Boahn said.
Now the maze, planted with sorghum and spreading across eight acres, is set to open to the public this weekend. The maze features mascots of Chocowinity’s three public schools, Chocowinity Primary, Chocowinity Middle and Southside High, as well as the 4-H club logo.
Last year, the farm hosted its first haunted trail and that attraction is back this year, bigger and better than ever, according to Boahn. Six Nights of Fright tours run each Friday and Saturday through Halloween weekend beginning at nightfall; those who aren’t fans of the spooky side of Halloween may opt to visit the non-haunted maze or hang out in the Lil Barn of Boos, which features games and other activities for youngsters. Live music, including performances by K-OS and Eli Craig Band, are also planned each weekend through the end of October.
The festivities are a way to give back to the community, Boahn said. Anyone purchasing tickets may designate any public school in Beaufort County or the local 4-H club as the recipient of a portion of the admission price. The Chocowinity Fire Department is also partnering again this year with farm staff in presenting the Haunted Trail and will share in those proceeds as well.
This month’s activities offer a little something for everyone.
“We don’t recommend anybody under 10 on the Haunted Trail, but it’s up to the parents to decide,” Boahn said.
There will even be an opportunity to preserve fall memories with photographs. Anybody paying general admission is welcome to bring along their own camera and make use of a rustic setting featuring an antique wagon, mums and pumpkins. A package with professional photos by Boahn may also be purchased.
As a bonus, the farm will debut its new children’s playground this weekend. The crew has been busy over the past several days putting the finishing touches on swings and a slide.
Vendors have signed on to sell their wares, and the farm plans to feature pumpkins, gourds, potted mums and corn-on-the-cob popcorn. Hot dogs, pizza and cotton candy will also be available for purchase.
Boahn said the farm has developed a safety net in the event of more bad weather.
“If you buy a ticket online in advance and it rains, you can use it any night we’re open,” she said. “We plan to keep the maze open at least until Nov. 7, but if the weather is great, we may try to open it another weekend.”
Even with all the fall events going on at the farm, the crew is already looking ahead to the Christmas season, Boahn said. Plans include tree sales, craft events for children and photos with Santa.
Raised in a Barn Farm is located on N.C. Highway 33 East in Chocowinity. Fall hours for the farm’s market are Mondays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
