William McDevett “Mac” Alligood Sr.

William McDevett “Mac” Alligood Sr., age 91, passed away on Sunday, October 18, 2015 at Vidant Beaufort Hospital in Washington. He was born in Washington, August 9, 1924 to the late Rosa McDevett and Harley K. Alligood Sr.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Charlene Bell Alligood; a daughter, Susan Alligood Stuart and husband, Bill of Cape Carteret; a son, William McDevett “Bill Mac” Alligood Jr. and wife, Mary Ann; a brother, Harley Kugler Alligood Jr. and wife, Beatrice; 2 grandsons, William McDevett Alligood III and wife, Katherine and Thomas Whitney Alligood; a great-grandson, William McDevett “Liam” Alligood IV, all of Washington and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He attended Washington City Schools and graduated in 1942, then enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Paris, France and England. He was discharged in 1946 and returned home to the family business. He married Charlene Swanner Bell on June 17, 1947, who survives.
He was co-owner and operator of Alligood’s Garage on Market Street, Washington for over 75 years. It has been a family business for over 100 years and is celebrating its 100th anniversary of association with Goodyear Tires. He served on the board of directors of Seaboard Savings and Loan and Washington City Board of Adjustments. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Washington since birth where he served as deacon, elder and Sunday School Superintendent for over 45 years. He was an avid hunter for many years. He loved working in the yard and feeding his ducks.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Rosemary Alligood Rhodes and Athalia Alligood Gravely Howerin.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, October 20, 2015 at Paul Funeral Home in Washington. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church, Washington. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Reverend Lee Kinney will officiate the services.
The following will serve as pallbearers: Jimmy Perry, Charles Harris, Doug Boyd, Tommy Swanner, John Jernigan and Billy Braddy.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Deacon’s Fund or Frames of Faith at First Presbyterian Church, 211 West 2nd Street, Washington, NC 27889.
