Candidates Forum Held In Tyrrell County

REPORT:
Fewer than two dozen Columbia voters turned out Thursday evening, October 22, to hear the candidates for mayor and alderman.
Michael Griffin is running for re-election as mayor. He is opposed by alderman Mike Crowder. Each has held his current office for eight years.
Lloyd Armstrong and Sandra Owens are unopposed for two seats on the board of aldermen. Owens is seeking a third four-year term, and Armstrong, who was absent, is a newcomer.
Karen Clough, president of the Greater Tyrrell County Chamber of Commerce, event sponsor, welcomed everyone.
Debbie Swain, Tyrrell elections director, explained early voting times and place plus election day procedures on November 3.
Early voting will be held in the county elections office, 403 Main Street (courthouse), from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, October 26; Wednesday, October 28, and Friday, October 30.
Voting on election day (Nov. 3) will be from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Tyrrell Hall, 906 Highway 64 East.
Attorney David Gadd introduced the candidates, and each made a two-minute opening statement.
Then all three candidates present answered a series of audience questions from Gadd.
Each candidate made a closing statement, and the 45-minute meeting ended.
Winners will take office on December 7; the mayor for two years and the aldermen for four years.
