Mosquito Spraying Done in Columbia Twice A Week

The Town of Columbia sprayed mosquitoes-controlling chemicals in Goat Neck community twice last week, town manager Rhett White said Monday(Oct 26).
This “good neighbor” gesture far beyond the town limits was in response to a request from Tyrrell County.
Commissioner Larry Hill told his colleagues on October 20 that Goat Neck residents needed mosquito control help after the community was “severely flooded” in early October. “It’s catastrophic,” he said, and suggested a show of “friendship from the town.”
Glenn Bailey, a Pledger Harbor Road resident, said Sunday (Oct. 25) the mosquitoes drove him off his lawnmower after the long rainy spell and flooding. “But the spraying made all the difference.”
White said he intends to have the area sprayed again this week.
Goat Neck is a near-sea-level community in the northeastern corner of Tyrrell County, bordered by Albemarle Sound to the north and Alligator Creek on the east.
White explained that mosquito spraying has been going on in town since July, “not consistently three times a week; it depends on how the mosquitoes are. If they’re not bothersome, we skip a day.”
Columbia’s spraying machine is calibrated yearly, and the operator is a certified chemical applicator, White said.
