Make-A-Wish makes Washington boy’s dreams come true

Five-year-old Lonnie Purvis is packing his bags after Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina recently granted his most desired dream.

Lonnie, a Washington boy battling a life-threatening cardiac condition will be joined by his family for a trip to Walt Disney World Resort and Legoland in Florida. Lonnie was born with heart disease and has undergone many surgeries, including having his aorta repaired, open-heart surgery and a mitral valve replacement, according to Twanicka Corey, Lonnie’s mother.

“He’s excited,” Corey said. “He’s ready to go. He asks every day if it’s time for him to leave yet.”

Lonnie’s mom, father James Purvis, 7-year-old brother Ziyon Corey, his uncle and grandparents will be joining him on the trip, according to Corey. Corey went online and submitted an application to Make-A-Wish in hopes of having Lonnie’s wish granted.

Some of Lonnie’s favorite things include McDonald’s, police cars and firemen so Make-A-Wish volunteers Steve and Wendy Dalberto teamed up with local McDonald’s owner/operator Bill Purcell to arrange something special, according to a Make-A-Wish press release.

Lonnie was picked up by an officer with the Washington Police Department on Sunday and a motorcade cleared the way for Lonnie trip to McDonald’s, where customers and crew welcomed him and his family with dinner and refreshments, the release said. During the send-off event, Lonnie was also given a special ride on a Washington Fire Department fire truck.

“We really want to make sure Lonnie knows how much our restaurant family, his local community, family and friends care about him and his recovery,” Purcell said. “We’re excited to help send him off to Walt Disney World Resort and Legoland.”

Corey said Lonnie and the family will leave for Disney World on Friday, a trip that will coincide with his sixth birthday on Nov. 8.

Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions, the release said. The chapter was founded in 1986 and serves eligible children who reside in the 49 counties east of the Orange/Alamance county line. The chapter operates solely through donations from people, foundations and corporations and since its inception, has granted more than 3,000 wishes.
