River Town Christmas event set to begin Dec. 3

Organized through the Greater Tyrrell County Chamber of Commerce, volunteers have been meeting monthly since August to plan and secure a successful River Town Christmas event this Dec. 3-6.

As in years past, the event will begin  Thursday, Dec. 3, with the Hospice Tree Lighting at the Tyrrell County Visitors Center followed by the church bells ringing throughout town.

Then, encapsulating one of the many holiday traditions in Columbia, everyone is invited to attend the Courthouse Tree Lighting with the Tyrrellineans serving hot cocoa and cookies.  The winners of the decorating contest will be announced along with musical talents on the courthouse lawn.

Wrapping up the first evening’s festivities, La Posada will begin at Columbia’s gazebo on the Town Common. This traditional Hispanic experience simulates the travels of the Holy Family and concludes with a fiesta at Columbia High School’s cafeteria.

All events during River Town Christmas are open to the public.  Stay tuned for additional events that will be featured in the next few weeks. For event questions and interest in participating during the weekend event, please contact Sara Phelps at 252-797-4800 or Haley Carson at 252-796-1996.
