Rita Potter Tetterton, age 81, a resident of Washington, died Sunday, November 15, 2015 at Vidant Inpatient Hospice in Greenville.

She was the daughter of the late Ray Potter and Manilla Potter Moore of Chocowinity. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother: William Ray Potter and her husband of 56 years: Jatha Milford “Goon” Tetterton.

Mrs. Tetterton graduated from Chocowinity High School and received a B.A. from East Carolina University. She worked at Beaufort Co. Dept. of Social Services as a social worker and acting director.

Mrs. Tetterton continued her career with the State Division of Social Services as an income maintenance representative out of the Greenville Regional Office until retirement. She made many lifelong friends during her employment. After retirement she worked part-time as a teacher at BCCC with the Job Skills program.

Mrs. Tetterton was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she taught an adult Sunday school class for many years. She was a mentor and inspiration to many youth throughout her life and was always open to helping others.

Mrs. Tetterton is survived by a daughter, Nancy Raye Tetterton of Raeford, NC, several cousins and many close friends and neighbors. All those who have contributed to her care in the past months, including Gloria Outlaw, are greatly appreciated.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, November 20, 2015 at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory on Thursday, November 19, 2015 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
