Law enforcement calls or complaints in Columbia fell by 15 percent in October, Tyrrell Sheriff Darryl Liverman reported to the board of aldermen.

The sheriff and his officers responded to 649 law calls in October, compared with 751 in September and 750 in August.

There were 27 ambulance calls inside the town in October versus 19 in September and 29 in August.

One fire was reported in October; there were three each in the two preceding months.

Officers conducted two investigations, issued four citations, and made one on-view arrest for drunk and disruptive in the northwest section of town, as divided by Scuppernong Drive and Broad Street.

In the northeast sector, officers conducted eight investigations, issued six citations, and served an arrest order for failure to appear in court to answer a charge of no operator’s license.

In the southwest section, two investigations were conducted.

And in the southeast quadrant, one investigation was conducted, one citation issued, three on-view arrests made (simple assault, and two for failure to disperse on command), and one arrest order was served for failure to appear to answer a charge of driving while impaired.

At the sheriff’s office five arrest orders were served, all for failure to appear in court as ordered, and two on-view arrests were made: one for being drunk and disruptive and malicious conduct by a prisoner (who damaged the holding cell), and one for injury to personal property.
