PANTEGO — Terra Ceia Christian School’s choral program is gearing up for its annual Christmas concert on Monday at 7 p.m.

Director Irene VanderWeit said this year’s program will have a few parts to it, beginning with the school’s new band of trumpeters performing. Then, the older choir for seventh through 12th grades will perform about nine numbers, including a medley of Christmas carols such as “The First Noel,” “Carol of the Bells” and “O Come All Ye Faithful.”

After these performances, the younger choir for kindergarten through sixth grade will present “We Three Spies,” a production about someone whose heart is eventually softened to the Christmas season over the course of the play, VanderWeit said.

“It’s just, you know, the storyline of the person who is like the Scrooge of Christmas,” she said.

According to VanderWeit, after the person witnesses the generosity and forgiveness of the people surrounding her, she experiences a change of heart. Toward the end of “Three Spies,” the choir will incorporate the story of Jesus’ birth.

“It’s a full night,” she said, also mentioning that the prekindergarten students are scheduled to perform as well.

VanderWeit said the older choir usually has Christmas and spring concerts, while the younger choir has the same, along with an added Grandparents Day performance, every year.

Although VanderWeit has been running the show for 15 years, she said she can’t help but get stressed out around performance time, but it always turns out for the best and the students do a good job.

During the older group’s practice on Thursday, the students seemed confident and ready for the performance, having all of the pieces memorized.

After rehearsing a few songs, one chorus member said, “That was good. We killed that,” drawing laughs from the rest of the choir.

“Every year it’s really beautiful. … These kids pull it out,” VanderWeit said. “I do love, love, love my job.”

Terra Ceia Christian School’s Christmas concert will be Monday at 7 p.m. at the school, 4428 Christian School Road, Pantego.
