The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College has announced its schedule of personal enrichment classes for spring 2016. Watch this space for additional classes in the coming weeks. All classes will be held on the BCCC campus. Gift certificates are available and make perfect stocking stuffers.

 

The schedule is as follows:

 

Android Workshop, 6-8:30 p.m., March 10, in room 115 or Building 2. Students will bring their own Android phones or tablets to this workshop to find out how to get the most from their devices, learning about apps, security settings, options and entertainment features. Registration fee is $15.

 

iPhone/iPad Workshop, 6-8:30 p.m., March 3, in room 115 of Building 2. Learn tips and tricks to get the most from your Apple products, including security features, apps and upgrades. Registration fee is $15.

 

Papier-Mâché Easter Eggs, 1-3 p.m., March 3, in room 829 of Building 8. Explore and develop the time-honored skill of papier-mâché. Students will create their eggs in the first two sessions, and paint and decorate them in the last two sessions. Registration fee is $40.

 

Opera: Turandot, 6-8:30 p.m., Jan. 26, AND 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 30, in room 829 of Building 8. Jeff Phipps, retired member of ECU’s Theater Department, will lead an exploration of this opera, and then on Saturday, the class will travel to the Greenville Grand to see the Metropolitan Opera’s live HD broadcast. Registration fee of $65 includes travel and ticket.

 

Opera: Madama Butterfly, 6-8:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 29, AND 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, April 2, in room 829 of Building 8. Carolina Shag Dancing – Beginner, 6-7:30 p.m., Tuesdays, Feb. 2 to March 8 OR May 17 to June 21, in room 826 of Building 8. Shagging is just plain fun! Master the basic steps and at least six moves, including dance etiquette. Registration fee is $50.

 

Carolina Shag Dancing – Intermediate, 6-7:30 p.m., Tuesdays, March 15 to April 19, in room 826 of Building 9. Once the basic steps are mastered, this class will teach additional moves to build the students’ repertoire. Registration fee is $50.

 

Mindfulness Becomes a Pathway to Creativity, 6-8 p.m., Tuesdays, Feb. 16 to March 22, in room 115 of Building 3. Students in this workshop will explore their creative desires to find the activities that suit them best. Painting, gardening, writing, crafting and other creative outlets will be explored. Registration fee is $45.

 

Organic Gardening, 6-8 p.m., Thursdays, Feb. 11 to March 10, in room 100 of the Building 8 Annex. This class will focus on sustainable growing methods for both vegetable and ornamental gardens. Agriculture technology instructor Billy Ray Askew will explain mulching, cover crops, composting, managing pests, square-foot gardens and hay bale gardens. Registration fee is $45.

 

More Organic Gardening, 6-8 p.m., Thursdays, March 24 to April 7, in room 100 of the Building 8 Annex. In these three sessions, students will grow their own plants, starting seeds and propagating in BCCC’s greenhouse. Beaufort County Master Gardener Judy Keohane will also explain the importance of pollinators. Registration fee is $35.

 

Perennial Gardens Excursion, 6-8:30 p.m., May 5 AND 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 12, in room 829 of Building 8. Clay Carter will lead a workshop on campus on May 5, and on May 12 the class will visit Tony Avent’s Plant Delights nursery and Juniper Level Botanical Garden in the Triangle area, along with the J.C. Raulston Arboretum and its perennial border at North Carolina State University. Registration fee of $71.25 includes accident insurance fee.

 

Birdwatching Excursion, 6-8:30 p.m., April 11 AND 8 a.m. to noon, April 16, in room 829 of Building 8. Our area offers terrific opportunities to enjoy birds and the outdoors. Ornithologist Quent Lupton will lead this two-session excursion class.

The Monday on-campus workshop will be followed by a Saturday birding trip to Goose Creek State Park. Registration fee of $41.25 includes accident insurance fee.
