On Dec. 9, the Smith family from Belhaven, event organizers from the Darleen’s Flamingo 5K, presented a check for $17,000 to the Shepard Cancer Foundation’s Board of Directors.

The sixth annual event featured a 5K run/walk, raffles and a breakfast after party with live music and awards.

The Darleen’s Flamingo 5K is organized in memory of Darleen Smith, who lived by the event’s motto, “Make Your Own Party.”

The mission of the Shepard Cancer Foundation is to financially support and promote the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center in its efforts to improve the mind, body and spirit of cancer patients, survivors and caregivers.
