BELHAVEN — Way Off Broadway Players is gearing up for another year and will soon start rehearsing for its next performance.

The small acting group out of Belhaven had its last show in mid-November, a three-night production of the risqué play, “The Sensuous Senator” by Michael Parker, in which Sen. Harry Douglas’ web of infidelity is revealed when all three women arrive at the same time to see him.

Director George Wahab said the play was a hit, and everyone seemed to have a good time.

“Everybody loved it,” he said. “It was one of the most receptive audiences we’ve ever had.”

Way Off Broadway has performed three plays a year since 2001, and while Wahab said he doesn’t have any ideas set in stone for the next play, he intends to start looking by the end of the week for one to perform.

The group’s first play of the year usually occurs in mid-March, he said.

“Well, I’d like to start (Jan. 4), but I think it might be a little later than that,” Wahab said with a laugh. “You’ve got to order the plays.”

Vicki Armstrong, who played a prostitute in “The Sensuous Senator,” said she is eager to start rehearsing again. Armstrong acted alongside her brother, Dean, who played the “Sensuous Senator” himself.

“I can tell you that they’re a lot of fun to do,” Armstrong said of the performances. She said she has been involved in the group on and off for a long time.

In a previous interview, Wahab said it is hard work being a part of Way Off Broadway Players, as the actors have full-time jobs and still have to make room for rehearsals. But overall, it is a lot of fun and a good way to showcase some of the county’s own talent.

“They’re something that I kind of look forward to, and I know (brother) Dean does, too,” Armstrong said.
