EASTERN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL VETERANS DAY: What better way to celebrate Veterans Day than to have a visit by a veteran! Mr. Durwood Moore came to Eastern Elementary School in Washington to talk to kindergarteners and first-graders about his years in the United States Navy. Mr. Moore is the father of first-grade teacher, Mrs. Monica Davis. Students from Mrs. Monica Davis’, Mrs. Roxanne Beeman’s, Ms. Heather Elliot’s, Mrs. Jackie Olson’s and Mrs. Mary Martin Moore’s classrooms enjoyed hearing Mr. Moore tell them about the ships he was on and the places he went during his 22 years in the Navy. The children were amazed to learn that Mr. Moore ate in a cafeteria on his ship just like they do at school. They loved hearing about the dentist who was on the ship and finding out that more people lived together on the ship than we have at our school. Mrs. Davis helped her father out by bringing out a map so that he could show the children all the places he traveled and lived during his Navy years. Mr. Moore brought pictures of the ships he was on and a ship yearbook to share with the children. One of the things that amazed the children the most was that a helicopter would land on the ship. Mr. Moore performed firefighter training and did repair work while serving in the Navy. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War.
