Find money for your good idea
The Small Business Center at Beaufort County Community College will offer a two-part workshop to help grant seekers with good ideas to convince funding organizations to invest in their projects.
The class sessions will be 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 23 and Jan. 30 in room 822 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus.
The workshop will be offered free of charge, but in order to allow for the adequate preparation of materials, pre-registration is requested. To pre-register, participants should call Eva Peartree at 252-940-6375 or email eva.peartree@beaufortccc.edu.
In this workshop, instructor Michele Oros will give students hands-on experience researching and writing needs assessments, designing concrete and measurable objectives and creating justifiable budgets.
The workshop is designed for more experienced grant seekers who are ready to begin putting their ideas into words.
A native of Connecticut, Oros has been actively and successfully seeking grant opportunities for Beaufort County Schools since 2003. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University in media studies and a master’s from ASU in library and media studies. She holds a doctorate in education from East Carolina University.
The mission of the Small Business Center Network is to increase the success rate and the number of viable small businesses in North Carolina by providing high-quality, readily accessible help to prospective and existing small business owners.

Build on your cake-decorating skills with Cake Decorating II
Do you have some experience decorating cakes for birthdays and holiday events? If so, improve your techniques with Cake Decorating II offered by the Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College.
The class will be 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays beginning Jan. 25 and ending Feb. 29 in room 830 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus. The registration fee is $45. A supply list is available upon registration.
Instructor Michelle Daniels will build on skills mastered in Cake Decorating I and introduce new techniques, such as working with fondant to make smooth, beautiful and detailed decorations. Fondant roses and leaves, basket weaves, rope borders, lilies, poinsettias and petunias are part of what students will add to their skills.

Turandot, opera appreciation class
Are you an opera lover or do you want to learn why millions of people enjoy opera each year? Let the Division of Continuing Education expand your musical horizons with a class to introduce you to the opera, “Turandot.”
Over a two-day period, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 26, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 30, instructor Jeff Phipps will explain the opera’s story line and describe what it takes to produce the spectacular opera, and will lead a trip to The Greenville Grande to see the Metropolitan Opera’s live, high-definition broadcast of “Turandot.” The registration fee is $65.
“Turandot” is the opera that contains the aria, “Nessun dorma,” made famous by Luciano Pavarotti and the Italian World Cup Soccer Team. In this production, Nina Stemme takes on the title role of the proud princess of ancient China, whose riddles doom every suitor who seeks her hand. Marco Berti plays the role of Calàf, the brave prince who sings “Nessun dorma” and wins her love.

Two classes offered this winter in forklift operations
The Division of Continuing Education will offer two classes this winter to train participants in forklift operations.
The classes will be Saturday, Jan. 23, and Feb. 20, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Beaufort County Skills Center, 705 Page Road in Washington.
Instructor William Cherry will present training bases on the National Safety Council’s Forklift Training program. Students in this class will review forklift operation, inspection and safe use of a forklift truck.
Students will also learn to inspect the truck and determine lift limitations, among other topics. At the end of the class, students will demonstrate proper use of a forklift by completing an obstacle course along with an inspection of the forklift.
The total of cost of the program is $77.25 and includes a $70 registration fee, a required textbook and wallet card from the National Safety Council and student insurance.

Learn American Sign Language
Learn American Sign Language during one of two classes offered by the Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College.
The class will be offered Mondays beginning Jan. 25 and ending March 14, and beginning April 4 and ending May 23 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in room 827 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus.
Instructor Dawn Brookins will introduce students to topics related to American Sign Language including basic history, terminology and the skills need to interpret sign language in a variety of settings. Students will receive suggested homework each week to review topics covered.
At the end of the course, students should have the knowledge and ability to have basic conversation using American Sign Language. The registration fee is $70. The required textbook, “Talking with Your Hands and Listening with Your Eyes,” is available from the BCCC Bookstore for an estimated $21.75. No books will be sold in class.
