Mr. Allen Olemphus Leggett, age 78, a longtime resident of Washington, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, January 15, 2016, surrounded by his family. A service was held at First Church of Christ and officiated by ministers Ray West and Steve Hill. Allen was laid to rest at Pamlico Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Sunday.
Leggett was born in Beaufort County on September 26, 1937 to the late John Churchill Leggett and Ida Gray Leggett. He was a student of the Old Ford School. After school, he joined the US Navy until he started working in the electrical field. Mr. Leggett joined the IBEW and remained a member until his death. Mr. Leggett left construction electrical work to start his own business: Leggett Electric Company. During his many years of electrical service he married Peggy Grissom on August 6, 1964 and they had been married 47 years. Allen was a faithful member of First Church of Christ where he attended friendship class and church.
He was preceded in death by his wife Peggy Grissom Leggett, and his infant daughter Tracy Dawn Leggett. Survivors include his daughter Michelle Leggett Rushton and her husband Brian Rushton of the home. His grandchildren Allen Michael Rushton and Abigail Dawn Rushton also reside in the home. He has two brothers Robbie Leggett and his wife Carol Leggett, Ricky Leggett and his wife Flame Leggett, Two sisters, Eleanor Faye Clark and Thurman Clark and Maggie Leggett Davenport of Washington. He also has several nieces and nephews.
