Norwood Leondias Spruill
July 18, 1929 – Feb. 26, 2016

Norwood Leondias Spruill, 86, of Plymouth, died Friday, February 26, 2016 at Washington County Hospital in Plymouth.

Born July 18, 1929 in Washington County, raised in Mackeys, he was the son of the late Hope Glenwood Spruill and Inez Beatrice Everett Spruill and was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Ayers Spruill; brother, Glenwood Hope Spruill; and sisters, Agnes Spruill Longano and Mary Elizabeth Phelps.

Norwood was a soft-spoken man with a smile and always an outreached hand who never met a stranger. He retired as a paper maker with Weyerhaeuser Corporation after forty-five years of outstanding service and was a member of Plymouth United Methodist Church. He served for more than thirty years as a member of the Plymouth Lions Club and was presented the Most Members Gained Award and named Lion Of The Year in 1994-1995. Even after he was unable to participate in the Lions Club annual feeding of the blind at the Outer Banks, he loaned his truck for food transport. An avid gardener, he was always willing to share of his bounty with neighbors and friends. He shared a great love for his family, friends, church and God.

His family includes his daughter, Diane Spruill James and husband Ben of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.; son, Stephen Norwood Spruill and wife Catherine of Greenville, N.C.; special friend, Helen Bass of Jamesville, N.C.; caretaker, Rachel Craddock; grandchildren, Amy Laura Spruill, Justin Lawrence Spruill, Cameron Mark James and Caroline Ayers James; great-grandchildren, Jordan and Harper.

Funeral service was held Monday, February 29, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Plymouth United Methodist Church with Dr. Jay Clark officiating. Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Gardens. Family received friends on Sunday, February 28, 2016 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Plymouth United Methodist Church and other times at the residence.
