Mrs. Mae Mills Long, age 89, a resident of Washington, died Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at Vidant Beaufort Hospital of Washington.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 14, 2016 at Oakdale Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Phillip Jethro. The family will receive friends 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. Monday at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory and go in procession to the cemetery for the service.
Mrs. Long was born in Beaufort County on March 27, 1926, daughter of the late James Cross Mills Sr. and the late Effie Mildred Campen Mills. She was a 1943 graduate of Chocowinity High School. On December 24, 1943 she married Reide Long who preceded her in death on April 26, 1997. The most important thing in Mrs. Long’s life was being a homemaker for her family. She also was the past postmaster of Blounts Creek Post Office and later worked with Hamilton Beach until her retirement. Mrs. Long was a member of First Baptist Church of Chocowinity.
Survivors include a daughter: Dorothy L. Sykes and husband Ralph of Virginia Beach, VA; a daughter-in-law: Anne B. Long of Washington; two sisters: Maude M. Miller of New Bern and Margaret M. Bagg of New Bern; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Long was predeceased by a son: Jimmy Long; four brothers: Joe Mills, Horace Mills, Shirley Mills and Edward Mills and one sister: Mildred M Dixon.
