Republicans Gary Brinn, Derik Davis, Jerry Evans and Hood Richardson will be headed for November’s election for Beaufort County Board of Commissioners.

Belhaven resident Don Cox placed last in Tuesday’s Republican primary for the four seats available on the board.

Longtime incumbent Hood Richardson was the top vote-getter with 2,004 from the county’s 21 precincts. Newcomer Derik Davis followed Richardson with 1,835 votes, while Jerry Evans placed third with 1,060 votes. Current Board of Commissioners Vice Chairman Gary Brinn’s vote count was 1,017 and Cox came in at 910.

Brinn, Davis, Evans and Richardson will run against the Board of Commissioners’ Democratic incumbents Robert Belcher and Chairman Jerry Langley in November.

Davis watched the primary numbers come at the Beaufort County Board of Elections on Tuesday night and said he was very pleased with the outcome—that it was a testament to voters looking for a new voice in local politics.

“I feel very encouraged and am looking forward to an increased dialogue with the voters and moving the campaign forward,” Davis said. “I congratulate all the other winners out there and look forward to seeing them out campaigning.”

For the 2016 primary, 12,714 Beaufort County voters went to the polls Tuesday or during the early voting period. During the last presidential election cycle in 2012, 11,797 people voted in the primary.

The vote totals are unofficial until the March 22 canvass.
