Optimist Club hosts ‘Kids Speak Out’ contest

From John Small Elementary School 

The Optimist Club of Washington held a Kids Speak Out Oratorical Contest at John Small Elementary School for fifth-graders. Mrs. Swain, Mrs. Bryant, Mr. Menninger, Ms. Holly and Ms. Horton worked with their students on the speeches. The subject of the speech was: “How My Best Brings Out the Best in Others.” Students were rated on poise, content of speech, delivery and presentation and overall effectiveness. Optimist Club members Janice LaBarbera, Valinda Pinkham and Patty Peebles conducted the contest in the classrooms. There were prizes for each winner. First place won $25, second place won $10 and third place won $5. All the winners received medals. All the contest participants received pencils and certificates. The teachers each received a $25 Wal-Mart gift card from the Optimist Club.
