EVE TUREK N.C. WILDLIFE: One of the smallest and most commonly seen woodpeckers in the country, including this region, is the downy woodpecker. With their tiny bills, downy woodpeckers drill into wood to eat harmful bugs. They're a great asset to the healthy ecosystem of our refuges and wooded areas.
